Yusuf Sayed got seven distinctions when the 2024 Matric results were announced on Tuesday. He has 79% in his other two subjects and will be applying for re-marks, hoping to take that up to a full house of nine.
He was the top academic at Jeppe Prep in Grade 7 and when he arrived at Jeppe High School for Boys he was determined to keep that up throughout high school. “I worked hard from day one and managed to be in the Top 10 every term since,” he said. “That consistency definitely paid off, but I also paid attention to the small things like friendliness and kindness and I think that led to having people on my side, which is important.”
Yusuf give a lot the credit to his parents. “They were always part of the plan for me and they kept me focused and enthusiastic, especially in times when I was a bit despondent.”
He believes the partnerships he set up with the other Top 10 boys motivated him greatly. “In particular, Seth Fabry and I worked together all the time. We would study together and, the night before exams we would contact each other for support,” he said.
“My teachers were also in my corner. Ms Sutherland, before she left, and Ms Standish-White this year, played a big part for me.”
Yusuf has been provisionally accepted to study Medicine at Wits this year
