MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

One of the most interesting experiences as a Headmaster is to sit amongst parents at a sporting event. In most cases I have found that in true South African tradition, parents support for their sons is passionate and no matter the outcome they stay loyal to their team.

The referee/umpire is always the first target of the supporters. I have realised that in the opinion of parent supporters the ref/umpire is blind and biased towards Jeppe and in many cases the ref/umpire has a history of being anti Jeppe and no matter what decision he makes it is wrong. This spills over from the true South African supporters’ culture.

I feel that you as supporters of your sons expect them to perform and there is a tendency to measure their performances against the provincial and international standards that we see on TV. We expect school boys to have the same skills and maturity levels of professional sportsmen. I feel that parents need to understand that they are watching boys between the ages of 14 and 18 years of age who are doing the best they can. We as a school expect our boys to practice hard and the boys are driven to achieve.

We need to remember and be aware that when supporting at school fixtures that the person sitting next to you could be a family member of the ref/umpire or parents of the boys participating that you have just verbally abused. Recently I was sitting next to the Headmaster of a visiting school whilst parents where having a field day of abusing his boys, coaches and the ref.

Please do not get me wrong I enjoy sitting amongst the parents and I am of the opinion that we have the best parent support of any school. My advice though is that although you do not agree with the decisions, behaviour of the boys or the ref/umpire that you should not publically attack any of them.

Your parental support and loyalty to our school is unquestionable. All I ask is that you think twice before you choose to make derogatory remarks about the officials, coaches or the opponents.

Mr. A. Dempsey
Headmaster

WELCOME TO NEW STAFF MEMBERS – MR. S. MCGEER

We are proud to welcome our new staff members and over the next few weeks we’ll be including a profile of each of them. This edition welcomes Mr. S. McGeer who has been appointed as Head of Department: Physical Science.

Mr. McGeer studied at North West University and majored in Maths, Chemistry and Physics. He’s an avid sportsman and played provincial cricket. In 2005 he received an invitation to play in England as the club professional for a season. After playing cricket and teaching part time in London, he decided to return home and focus on teaching. He received a national teaching award for excellence in secondary education in 2008. In 2010 the United States embassy asked Mr. McGeer to take part in an international teacher exchange programme, where he taught at Rondout Valley High School in New York State. He’s been involved in numerous tours – sporting and educational. Rowing tours in Namibia, ski tours in Europe and travelling through Namibia and Botswana. For the past 10 years he’s been involved in an annual camping trip in Magoebaskloof near Tzaneen for a week with 100 learners. Jeppe High School for Boys is proud to welcome Mr. McGeer as a Senior Housemaster and we look forward to all he has to offer to our school.

CANSA RELAY FOR LIFE – 9 MARCH 2012 AT 19:00.
Jeppe High School for Boys is proud to be hosting a CANSA Relay for Life. This 12 hour overnight event will take place on the top Jeppe field on Friday 9 March 2012 at 19:00 to 07:00 on Saturday 10 March 2012.

We would like to encourage as many participants as possible as ALL funds raised will go directly to CANSA for the further research and support of those affected by this terrible disease. We are appealing to all parents for support, be it in the form of participation, sponsorship or donations. We would also like to collect empty 2l cold drink bottles and plain white candles to be used to mark the 400m relay course on the night. All contributions can be dropped off at Jeppe in the front office.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. A. Machos (Event Chair) on amachos@jeppeboys.co.za.

JEPPE COMMUNICATION
Please note that the majority of our communication takes place through the Jeppe Communicator. This online desktop application updates daily with all the news, calendar events and goings-on at Jeppe. We also publish our academic dates and test timetables on the calendar, making it an extremely useful application to have. We would like to encourage all parents to install the application. It can be downloaded from the Jeppe Boys website under the “Downloads” section and is 2mb in size. Alternately your son can collect a CD with the application from Mr. Purchase in the Sports Office.
