INTER HOUSE 500M SWIM Article by Kneo Mokgopa
On a placid Friday morning, young Bongani Masilela woke up the smallest in his House, and by tradition, he would be the House Mascot for the 500m swim. Timid, enthusiastic and proud to be given such a large responsibility, he packed his trunks and his red builders’ hard hat! This was not a day for cowards without heart; this would be a day for house colours to pump through the boys' veins, the first event of the year.
For the love of the house, we all plunge ourselves into the valley of the shadow of wet and yet we fear no failure, it is the spirit of Jeppe, the spirit of Koodoo, Duiker, Tsessebe, Oribi and the others that turn our hearts into gold as we dive, painted maroon, orange and blue to swim 20 laps for their beloved house. It was complete havoc, reminiscent of Catrina in the pool opened by WF Silburn (Sable) in 1947 - A square pool with no short cuts - a pool formidable for the depth it exposed within the boys. There was no gambit, no sign of who was beating who, only a case of “one more lap boy! Push boy, push!” Eric Mdluli putting in the hard yards, tugging himself on the dividers, Gabriel Brandao putting in his laps to contribute to his house, and then there was Mpiwentle Dlamini, Head of Oribi, kicking steadily after his House had left, securing those points. "That's the difference between me and you, I give everything my all" says Dlamini, putting in his laps after his Basketball Practice. After all the effort had been made and skin was sunburnt on top of torn muscles, the results were as follows:
1st Duiker with 47 points
2nd Koodoo with 35.5 points
3rd Tsessebe with 29 points
4th Roan with 27.5 points
5th Sable with 27 points
6th Eland with 24 points
7th Oribi with 21 points
8th Impala with 16.5 points
Congratulations to all the boys who came out to participate and support in keeping this tradition alive. Forti Nihil Difficilius!
INTER HOUSE GALA Article by Kneo Mokgopa
Take position. Look right: Cameron Wright. Damn. Heart palpitates. Deep breath. Expose ribs. Shake off Goosebumps. Focus.
This was the case at the 72nd Interhouse Gala. An event that uses no quota system; this is where true colours are exposed.
Amongst the Waterpolo Players with the shoulders of Atlas, there were, littler people. Scrawny Grade 8s coaxed into the pool after making known their lack of talent in the butterfly stroke, and yet they took their positions amongst the best. But that’s what it takes to become the best – courage. It doesn’t take courage to compete in an event you know you will win, that’s easy. Seth Weiner of Koodoo is one such courageous young man. Time after time he put his hand up to the fill in that position and overcome that feeling of insignificance, of being an unwanted minority, seizing the day. Although he began his races fighting, he ended last and burnt out, only to put his hand up for the next race, to beat himself, to grow his courage and harness the Jeppe Spirit, to become the best.
It has been said that yesterday’s World Records are today’s qualifying times. The best do not compete against each other; they compete against themselves and their own limits.
Today was an emphatic day. 9 school records were broken and Roan undid their curse and refused to come last, Duiker priding themselves on winning the second consecutive interhouse event and Tsessebe filling up their stand. An average, emphatic day at Jeppe.
If you thought a Cannon Ball was exciting, imagine the thrill of swimming with tomorrows Olympians.
1st Duiker with 164 points
2nd Tsessebe with 131 points
3rd Koodoo with 119 points
4th Oribi 118
5th Impala 107
6th Roan 103
7th Eland 98
8th Sable 72
Look inside: Me. Great. Personal records? Smashed. Deep breath. Heart exposed. High 5s. Smile.
